Los meses de negociación, la candidatura de Pedro Sánchez a la Presidencia del Gobierno, su investidura (fallida) y la iniciativa política que ha tenido en los últimos meses no han servido para que cambie la percepción entre la mayoría de los españoles, que siguen sin ver al PSOE como un partido ganador en las urnas.

In some ways he hadn’t slept since fleeing his home of Eritrea four years before, his days blurred into a nightmarish sequence of a life lived on the margins. Rootless without a home or family, community or country, he had found himself alone each night with unanswerable questions of the future and known fears of the past, tossing in his bed as he drifted through the empty expanse of an unrealized dream.

Punto".Si quieren denunciar la incompetencia y la lentitud de la respuesta a la crisis de los refugiados, que nos llamen a los ciudadanos europeos a marchar con ellos sobre Bruselas para hacer oír nuestra voz; que se ofrezcan como voluntarios para las nuevas e imprescindibles tareas de identificación y trámite de las solicitudes de asilo, mientras no llega la burocracia paneuropea. Tener reparos por la deportación a Turquía es comprensible, pero no se pueden bloquear las salidas porqué el riesgo es agravar aún más la situación de esa pobre gente.
Vamos al segundo problema, el alarmismo. Por ejemplo, hagamos un experimento sencillo e imaginario. Cogemos a alguien y le damos 100 g de jamón serrano y evaluamos su salud. Al día siguiente le damos 200g, al siguiente 400g y así cada día vamos doblando la cantidad. Al principio todos los parámetros de salud salen normales, pero cuando las dosis se hacen altas vemos que el riñón y otros órganos empiezan a fallar. Al final el señor se muere. ¿Imaginario? Para cualquier sustancia se puede determinar su nivel de toxicidad haciendo experimentos similares al que he descrito, pero en animales. El parámetro más típico es el LD50 (de lethal dose) que es la concentración que provoca que la mitad de los animales del experimento fallezcan. Y siembre hay un nivel a partir del cual una sustancia, la que sea, es tóxica.
Por ejemplo, el LD50 del agua es de 6 litros. Ahora que muchos ayuntamientos quieren prohibir el glifosato, cabría recordar que el de la cafeína o la aspirina es mucho más bajo. Es decir, necesitas menos dosis para morirte. Similar pasa con los compuestos cancerígenos. Existen ensayos para evaluar la capacidad de un compuesto para producir cáncer, y el resultado no es "sí" o "no", sino una probabilidad de producir cáncer en un determinado espacio de tiempo. Por lo tanto, cuando se desató el pánico hace unos meses porque el jamón y la mortadela eran cancerígenas, cabría recordar que lo importante no es que lo sean, sino en qué magnitud. Y su magnitud es bastante baja. De hecho, el sujeto imaginario del experimento anterior no se muere de cáncer sino atiborrado de jamón.

The GOP must stop Trump
DONALD J. TRUMP’S VISION for the future of our nation is as deeply disturbing as it is profoundly un-American.
It is easy to find historical antecedents. The rise of demagogic strongmen is an all too common phenomenon on our small planet. And what marks each of those dark episodes is a failure to fathom where a leader’s vision leads, to carry rhetoric to its logical conclusion. The satirical front page of this section attempts to do just that, to envision what America looks like with Trump in the White House.
It is an exercise in taking a man at his word. And his vision of America promises to be as appalling in real life as it is in black and white on the page. It is a vision that demands an active and engaged opposition. It requires an opposition as focused on denying Trump the White House as the candidate is flippant and reckless about securing it.
After Wisconsin, the odds have shrunk that Trump will arrive in Cleveland with the requisite 1,237 delegates needed to win the nomination outright. Yet if he’s denied that nomination for falling short of the required delegates, Trump has warned, “You’d have riots. I think you’d have riots.” Indeed, who knows what Trump’s fervent backers are capable of if emboldened by the defeat of their strongman at the hands of the hated party elite.
But the rules are the rules — and if no candidate reaches that magic number, the job of choosing a nominee falls to those on the convention floor.
That’s not a pretty picture. But then nothing about the billionaire real estate developer’s quest for the nation’s highest office has been pretty. He winks and nods at political violence at his rallies. He says he wants to “open up” libel laws to punish critics in the news media and calls them “scum.” He promised to shut out an entire class of immigrants and visitors to the United States on the sole basis of their religion.
The toxic mix of violent intimidation, hostility to criticism, and explicit scapegoating of minorities shows a political movement is taking hold in America. If Trump were a politician running such a campaign in a foreign country right now, the US State Department would probably be condemning him.
Realizing that the party faces a double bind, a few conservatives have been clear-eyed enough to see the need for a plausible, honorable alternative that could emerge from the likely contested convention. Names like Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney have come up. If no candidate gets a majority on the convention’s first ballot, such a nomination might be theoretically possible.
This would have no modern precedent: Ordinarily, parties put aside their differences after primaries and rally to the front-runner because they share basic common goals and values. In any other election cycle, anti-Trump Republicans would just look like sore losers. But Trump lacks those common values — not just the values of Republicans but, it becomes clearer every day, those of Democrats.
House Speaker Ryan spoke to the possible long-term damage with which the party is flirting. “Leaders with different visions and ideas have come and gone; parties have risen and fallen; majorities and White Houses won and lost,” he said. “But the way we govern endures: through debate, not disorder.” The problem is that Trump has already crossed lines that a politician with a sincere commitment to democratic norms must never cross.
At some point, after the election, Republicans will also need to ask themselves some tough questions about how their actions and inactions made the party vulnerable to Trump. After all, a candidate spewing anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, authoritarian rhetoric didn’t come out of nowhere; the Tea Party has been strong enough long enough that someone like him shouldn’t be a surprise. Chasing short-term political gains, the GOP missed a lot of chances to fight the hateful currents that now threaten to overwhelm it.
For now, Republicans ought to focus on doing the right thing: putting up every legitimate roadblock to Trump that they can. Unexpectedly, a key moment in American democracy has snuck up on the GOP. When he denounced Trump, Romney said he wanted to be able to say he’d fought the good fight against a demagogue. That’s the test other Republicans may want to consider.
Action doesn’t mean political chicanery or subterfuge. It doesn’t mean settling for an equally extreme — and perhaps more dangerous — nominee in Ted Cruz. If the party can muster the courage to reject its first-place finisher, rejecting the runner-up should be even easier.
The Republican Party’s standard deserves to be hoisted by an honorable and decent man, like Romney or Ryan, elected on the convention floor. It is better to lose with principle than to accept a dangerous deal from a demagogue. BOSTON GLOBE

There is a connection between Darwin and economics, but it isn’t in the way Frank thinks it is.9 In October of 1825, Darwin matriculated at Edinburgh University where, as a matter of general course curricula, he studied the works of the great Enlightenment thinkers, including David Hume, Edward Gibbon, and Adam Smith. A decade later, upon his return home from the five-year voyage around the world on HMS Beagle, Darwin revisited these works, reconsidering their implications in light of the new theory he was developing.10 Although Darwin does not reference Smith directly, Darwin scholars are largely in agreement that he modeled his theory of natural selection after Smith’s theory of the invisible hand.11 Compare, by example, these two descriptions from Smith and Darwin:
Every individual is continually exerting himself to find out the most advantageous employment for whatever capital he can command. … He generally, indeed, neither intends to promote the public interest, nor knows how much he is promoting it. He intends only his own gain, and he is in this, as in many other cases, led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention.

Analogously, economies are intricate, complex, and look designed, so our folk economic intuition is to infer that we need an intelligent designer, a Government. But as Smith and Darwin demonstrated, life and economies are not intelligently designed from the top down; they spontaneously arise out of simpler systems from the bottom up. Natural selection and the invisible hand explain precisely how individual organisms and people, pursuing their own self-interest in their struggle to survive and make a living, generate the emergent property of complex ecologies and economies. Charles Darwin and Adam Smith each in their unique way trying to solve a specific problem, independently stumbled across an elegant solution to what turns out to be a larger and overarching phenomenon of the emergence of complexity out of simplicity. Apparent design from the bottom up does not imply the necessity of intentional design from the top down.
These descriptors—invisible hand and natural selection—are so powerful, and so deeply annealed into our thought and culture, that it is difficult not to think of them as forces of nature, such as gravity and electromagnetism, or as mechanical systems, such as gears and pulleys. But they are not forces or mechanisms, because there is nothing acting on the agents in the system in such a causal manner. Instead, Smith’s invisible hand and Darwin’s natural selection are descriptions of processes that naturally occur in the economies of nature and society. The causal mechanisms behind the invisible hand and natural selection lie elsewhere in the system—within the agents themselves—which is why Smith invested so much work on understanding the natural sympathies of people, and Darwin advanced so much effort toward comprehending the natural tendencies of organisms.

El jurista Carlos Jiménez Villarejo (Málaga, 1935) vivió con entusiasmo e ilusión el nacimiento de Podemos. Se incorporó a sus filas y llegó a ser eurodiputado de esa formación tras las elecciones de mayo de 2014. Renunció al cargo poco después pero no por razones de sintonía política. En cambio, sí que fueron razones de índole política las que le llevaron a anunciar meses más tarde que abandonaba la formación que dirige Pablo Iglesias. The dangers that society will face in the years ahead are regrettable, but there's no point in allowing anxiety, frustration, or apathy to overcome you. Face the future with courage, curiosity, and optimism rather than fear. You can be a winner, and if you plan carefully, you will be. The great period of change will give you a chance to regain control of your destiny. And that in itself is the single most important thing in life. This depression can give you that opportunity; it's one of the many ways the Greater Depression can be a very good thing for both you as an individual and society as a whole.
